More Backing Vocals
More (the first song in my Start Here project) is really starting to come together now! Ruben came over on Friday to record some very nice guitars, which I’ve been slicing and dicing into the mix over the weekend. I have also begun putting in the backing vocals which, I think, are going to be pretty sweet. Here’s some proof:
This is not yet the final mix, of course. I’m also not entirely happy yet with the second line (”on the edge of a knife”) of the backing vocal, so I’ll do a few more takes on that one. It’s a bit of a challenge to get it right, because it is a difficult pitch (for me) and has to fit in tonally and timing wise with the lead vocal. The trickiest part is to not make it sound like it wants to be the lead vocal. Backing vocals are hard!
In additional to finishing the backing vocals, there are a few more instrumental parts I need to record. After that, it will be a “simple” matter of putting everything together in the mix. More on that later…

This is very good. Sounds very optimistic and uplifting. I personally prefer a bit harder form of rock music, but I can really enjoy a song that makes me feel good and inspires me. Keep up the good work Jim!

Thanks D! The final version will have some more rocky guitars in it, but I’m definitely staying on the poppy side of rock for this one.

Cool sound!
I personally did not notice anything off tone or pitch-wise with the background on that line you mention. Expect maybe it sounds more like “the edge of night,” rather than “the edge of a knife.” A little more enunciation on the word “a.”
Again, cool sound. Did you record at home?
Oh and that link to Start Here came up as broken on both my computers. It could be something on my end but you may want to recheck it.

Thanks Jannie!
The take I have is not off tone or pitch, but I still think I can do a little better…
Yup, I record at home.
I’ve fixed the link, so it works now (not sure what happened there…)
